Following a dryer fire in one of the adjacent townhouses Dryer Vent Cleaner were invited to inspect some of the 20 homes.
We inspected 6 of the homes and found all of them had long dryer vents over 30 feet and none of the owners knew that dryer vents ever needed cleaning through! These homes are 22 years old and had never had the dryer vents cleaned out. 3 of the homes had white vinyl connecting the dryer to the rest of the duct work.
Case Study Dryer Vent Cleaning & Dryer Hose Replacement
Scenario – home owner worried after a neighbors dryer fire in Burlington’s Brant Hills area. We determined that the white vinyl hose needed replacing, the dryer being 20 years old we agreed to strip it down and clean/service it as well as clean the 30 feet of dryer vent that was full of lint.
Why Vinyl Hose Should Be Replaced.
This hose is not recommended by the dryer manufacturers themselves! It has long been recognized as a fire hazard. The purpose of the hose between the dryer and the dryer duct in the wall is to transition the connection between the two. In the event of a dryer fire the transition hose and duct should contain the fire so it hopefully burns out before spreading through the walls. This white vinyl hose and the thin foil thats really plastic and foil will add fuel to any fire should one happen!
Why The Wrong Hose is Used to Connect Dryers?
The simple answer is its easy! Yes rather than buy the right tools to do the job properly its easy to get a length of the wrong stuff and install it. When finishing a basement it will cost much more to open up the drywall to remove the thin foil or white vinyl hose than it would to get the dryer vent installed properly in the first place.
